The day we got The Call

You know the one I'm talking about - the call we, as waiting families, are all waiting for like every second of every day.

Our flight had just landed and as we turned our phones back on we both had a missed call. We were on our way to a friend's wedding. At first it didn't register, but then we realized that the area code was from our social worker! Sheldon listened to her message while I was freaking out in the seat next to him. I felt like the message could not play any slower. Our social worker (let's call her Katie) said we needed to call her back because there was a birth mom (let's call her Emily) who wanted to meet us. In fact, her words were something like "She feels a very strong attachment to you guys and wants to meet you. Please call me back as soon as you can."

Here's a picture of us at our friend's wedding reception. It's the last picture we have of our family of 2!

So we called Katie back while we were still waiting to leave the plane. A call like that can't wait. She let us know that there was an expectant mom who saw our profile book and she was absolutely sure we were the perfect family to adopt her child. Over the next hour, Katie went on to tell us all about Emily and the situation that led her to make an adoption plan. Let me just tell you that it's a heartbreaking story. Then she told us the craziest part: Emily was due in ten days. What?!

We ended our call agreeing to call back the next day to let her know if we would like to meet Emily. It was A LOT to take in. Driving for an hour to our hotel, we were completely overwhelmed with everything Katie had just told us. So we prayed and called our friends and family and then prayed again. After settling in to our room, we prayed some more. It didn't take long before Sheldon and I felt an overwhelming sense that we were ready to move forward. The next day we called Katie back to set up a meeting with Emily. We then excitedly and nervously attended our friend's wedding.
